Testimonials

In my sixteen years as a counselor, I have rarely experienced a colleague who is so invested in the future of students. Phil takes the time to get to know students and their strengths, weaknesses, and potential for future endeavors. As a teacher in the International Baccalaureate program, he witnessed the college admissions process as it directly related to each student and their unique interests and needs. His knowledge of the college application process and nuances of specific admissions offices is remarkable.

Picking a college is a minefield. The possibilities are dizzying, which is why we were glad to know about Phil. He knows the landscape and worked to understand our daughter’s needs and ours as well. As a long-time teacher, he knows how to connect with students and give them all the information they need to make an informed decision. I’m glad we had him in our corner.

Phil Greenfield has made a career out of inspiring students to reach academic success.  He was a master Social Studies/International Baccalaureate teacher for many years, the vast majority of them spent at Annapolis High School.  While developing young minds he realized that his students needed a great deal of support in the college process and he was eager to assist them—all of them regardless of trajectory.  Phil is willing and able to assist students with their collegiate search and he does so in a pointed and appropriate manner.  The students who are lucky enough to have his advice and support land in the correct academic institution for them. Many would not have attended college at all without his willingness to do everything it took to help them. He is, simply put, one of the most intelligent and willing college advisors I have known!

The second I mentioned my son was interested in majoring in Chinese, Mr. Greenfield told me about the Language Flagship Programs for critical languages. He met with my son, Chase, to learn about him, his pastime activities, his career goals, and what he was looking for in a college experience. Based on Chase’s feedback, Mr. Greenfield was able to narrow the choices of schools and suggest others that were suitable. It was amazing how quickly he found all sorts of information about the various programs and professors in order for us to learn about the different options and opportunities offered by each school. He sent numerous emails checking in on both of us, and was so excited when Chase made his decision to attend the University of Rhode Island’s Flagship Chinese program. Mr. Greenfield’s 30+ years of teaching high school students and dealing with parents translates into his ability to work with both parents and kids. He is warm, extremely funny, witty, calming, and insightful. His ability to read my son, ask the right questions, make gentle suggestions, and share the results of his research was indispensable.

We worked with Phil “long-distance” last year when our daughter was searching for a college. He was insistent that he speak with her at length in order to get a sense of her as a person, and to ask about her preferences in a school. Though she is a bit on the shy side, they clicked. Phil then went ahead to recommend places that fit her interests and personality, and to provide us with the kind of information you don’t find in mailings and websites. He also had a “gut sense” of the environment at many of the recommended colleges, having visited many and known students who attended them. Phil’s prices, incidentally, are well below the often outrageous cost of hiring such consultants. The result is that my daughter is happy socially and feeling academically challenged after finishing her first year of college.
